MICHAEL is the cinematic portrayal of the life and legacy of one of the most influential artists the world has ever known. The film tells the story of Michael Jackson's life beyond the music, tracing his journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent as the lead of the Jackson Five, to the visionary artist whose creative ambition fueled a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world.
The Story
In 1966, steel worker Joseph Jackson assembles his five sons into the musical band the Jackson 5, with the youngest, Michael, on lead vocals. After months of grueling rehearsals, the Jackson 5 perform at gigs until they are signed with Motown. Their albums top the charts and they sell out concerts across the US, allowing them to move from Gary, Indiana, to a mansion in Encino, California.
In 1978, Michael signs with Epic Records for his first solo album, Off the Wall, with Quincy Jones producing. Following a pivotal argument with his father, Michael takes control of his own destiny. In 1981, he hires John Branca as his attorney and fires Joseph. Feeling insecure about his appearance, Michael undergoes a rhinoplasty.
Michael experiments with ideas for his next album. After watching a news report on the Crips–Bloods gang war, he composes "Beat It." After watching horror films on TV, he decides on the title Thriller. With the album breaking sales records, Michael and Branca head to New York to convince MTV to play his music videos — changing the music industry forever.
The film culminates with Michael performing at Wembley Stadium during the iconic Bad World Tour in 1988, cementing his status as the King of Pop.
